Power–ground–signal: the default framework
Unknown component, unfamiliar car, no idea where to begin. Use one framework that works almost everywhere.
What this lesson covers
CORE TEACHING Inputs/outputs; power supply; ground/return; signal/command; load; module communication. PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS AND TESTS Pick three unrelated components and identify their power, ground and signal/control paths from diagrams/connectors. ADVANCED / SCAN TOOL LAYER Include scan PIDs and scope signals as different ways of observing the ‘message’. KEY DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS What powers it? How does current return? What tells it what to do / what does it tell the ECU? MUST-COVER CHECKPOINTS Circuit must be loaded; positive side; ground side; connection-by-connection split; compare post-to-terminal; retest after repair.
