LIN Bus — the single-wire network on smart components

A blower controller, smart alternator, mirror or wiper has power and ground but ignores commands. The missing piece may be one LIN wire.

What this lesson covers

CORE TEACHING LIN master/slave architecture; single-wire communication; pull-up and recessive state; message scheduling by master; common uses: alternators, battery sensors, HVAC flaps/controllers, mirrors, seats, wipers, rain/light sensors; power/ground plus communication; sleep/wake behaviour; LIN DTCs. PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS AND TESTS Identify LIN wire from diagram; check power/ground first; meter average voltage only as a clue; scope healthy LIN traffic; unplug slave and observe network/scan response; compare command PID with physical response. ADVANCED / SCAN TOOL LAYER Single-channel scope; scan actuator tests; LIN status/DTCs; compare good vs flat/noisy LIN waveform. KEY DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS Is the master talking? Is the slave powered? Does the LIN wire have traffic? Is one slave dragging the line down? MUST-COVER CHECKPOINTS Confirm slave power/ground; identify master; inspect single data wire; scope traffic; command component; compare command vs response; isolate slave if line is dragged down.
