Power, ground and signal — the universal sensor pattern
Scanner says a sensor is implausible. Before replacing it, what are the three things you prove?
What this lesson covers
CORE TEACHING 5 V reference; sensor ground; signal; shared references; ECU interpretation; back-probing; connector integrity. PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS AND TESTS Three-wire pressure sensor: check reference, ground drop, signal KOEO/running; disconnect and observe changes. ADVANCED / SCAN TOOL LAYER Scope signal and compare with scan PID. Show one sensor with correct voltage but noisy waveform. KEY DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS Does the sensor have what it needs? Is it producing a believable answer? Is the ECU seeing the same answer? MUST-COVER CHECKPOINTS Identify sensor technology; supply/ground if applicable; expected signal type; physical stimulus; scan comparison; scope if time-varying; wiring-to-ECU proof.
